The Vel is Murugan's spear — the weapon Parvati gave him to defeat Surapadman, and the emblem devotees keep at the centre of a pooja shelf. We carry it from three inches, small enough to hand out at a temple function, up to nine inches with a weighted base.

Which size Vel should I buy for a home pooja room?
Four to six inches suits most home pooja shelves. A three-inch Vel is better for a car dashboard, a small shelf, or for giving away in numbers at temple functions. Six inches and above reads as the centrepiece of an arrangement rather than one object among several.

The ones described as having a base do — the base is weighted so it stays upright without a stand. The smaller dashboard Vel has a flat weighted base made to stay put through braking and speed breakers.
How do I clean a brass Vel?
Wipe with a dry soft cloth after use. For tarnish, a paste of tamarind or lemon with a pinch of salt, rubbed gently and rinsed, restores the shine without scratching. Avoid abrasive scourers and harsh chemical polishes, which strip the finish.
