Murugan Vel

The Vel is Murugan's spear — the weapon Parvati gave him to defeat Surapadman, and the emblem devotees keep at the centre of a pooja shelf. We carry it from three inches, small enough to hand out at a temple function, up to nine inches with a weighted base.
Two materials. Brass is heavier, takes on a warmer tone as it ages, and is what temple metalwork has always been made from. Golden-finish steel is lighter and brighter, stays that way with a wipe, and costs less for the same size. Neither is better — they suit different uses.

Questions about this
The things people ask us most before ordering.
Which size Vel should I buy for a home pooja room?
Four to six inches suits most home pooja shelves. A three-inch Vel is better for a car dashboard, a small shelf, or for giving away in numbers at temple functions. Six inches and above reads as the centrepiece of an arrangement rather than one object among several.
Brass or golden-finish steel — what is the difference?
Brass is heavier, develops a warmer tone as it ages, and is the traditional temple material. Golden-finish steel is lighter, brighter, and stays that way with a wipe — easier for daily handling and cheaper for the same size. Neither is better; they suit different uses.
Does the Vel stand on its own?
The ones described as having a base do — the base is weighted so it stays upright without a stand. The smaller dashboard Vel has a flat weighted base made to stay put through braking and speed breakers.
How do I clean a brass Vel?
Wipe with a dry soft cloth after use. For tarnish, a paste of tamarind or lemon with a pinch of salt, rubbed gently and rinsed, restores the shine without scratching. Avoid abrasive scourers and harsh chemical polishes, which strip the finish.
