Om Vilakku & Brass Lamps
3 products · ₹229–₹700 · free shipping above ₹500
An Om Vilakku is an oil lamp carrying the Om symbol raised on its front, lit for daily pooja. It is not a kuthu vilakku — that is the tall five-wick standing lamp. These are shelf lamps, single-wick, sized for a home pooja room rather than a temple hall.
Buy it with the thattu if you can. The plate catches the oil and the spent wick so they stay on the plate rather than on your shelf, and finding one that fits afterwards is harder than it sounds. Gingelly oil is the traditional choice and burns with the steadiest flame.

Questions about this
The things people ask us most before ordering.
What is an Om Vilakku?
An oil lamp carrying the Om symbol raised on its front, lit for daily pooja. It differs from a kuthu vilakku, which is the tall five-wick standing lamp — an Om Vilakku is smaller, sits on a shelf, and takes a single wick.
What is the thattu for?
The thattu is the plate the lamp stands on. It catches the oil and the spent wick so they stay on the plate rather than on your shelf. Buying the lamp with its matching thattu saves finding one that fits later.
Which oil should I use?
Gingelly (sesame) oil is the traditional choice in Tamil homes and burns clean with a steady flame. Ghee is used for special occasions. Coconut oil works but burns faster.
How do I clean a brass vilakku?
Wipe away oil residue while the lamp is still slightly warm — it comes off far more easily than once it has set. For soot and tarnish, tamarind or lemon with a little salt, rubbed gently and rinsed dry. Never leave it wet.
