Setting up a Murugan pooja shelf
A Vel, a lamp and an idol is the arrangement most homes settle on. Here is how they sit together, and what people get wrong.

Direction and height
Traditionally the shelf faces east or north, so the person praying faces east or west. In a flat where that is not possible, the north-east corner of any room is the usual compromise, and the practice matters more than the compass.
Height is more often got wrong than direction. The main idol should sit at roughly chest height when standing, or eye level when seated — not above head height, and not near the floor. Too high and you cannot tend the lamp; too low and it sits in the path of feet, which is what people are trying to avoid.
Avoid placing it against a wall shared with a bathroom, or directly under a staircase.
The three pieces
Most Murugan shelves settle on the same three things, and they are worth buying in this order if you are starting out.

Spacing
Leave the lamp room to breathe. A vilakku pushed against a wall or crowded by an idol will scorch what is behind it over months, and on a wooden shelf that is a real risk rather than a theoretical one.
Four inches of clear space around a lit lamp is a reasonable minimum. If the shelf is shallow, put the lamp on a thattu at the front edge rather than tucking it behind.
Keep the flame away from anything hanging — garlands, cloth, and the edges of a shelf liner.
What to add next
A thattu, if your lamp did not come with one. It catches oil and spent wicks and saves the shelf.
A small bell, and a container for vibhuti and kumkum.
A second vilakku, so you can light a pair. Lamps are traditionally lit in pairs where space allows.
Keeping it
Wipe the shelf and the lamp daily — oil spreads further than you expect, and a shelf cleaned weekly is already sticky.

Replace wicks rather than reusing a burnt one. A frayed wick smokes, and soot on a new lamp is avoidable.
