Which size Murugan Vel for a home pooja room?

Three inches to nine, and what each one is actually for. The most common mistake is buying too small for the shelf it will sit on.

The short answer

For most home pooja rooms, four to six inches. Below four inches a Vel reads as an accessory beside the idol rather than an object in its own right; above six it starts to dominate a domestic shelf unless the shelf is deep.

If you are buying your first Vel and have no strong preference, six inches with a base is the safest choice. It holds the centre of an arrangement, and it is tall enough to still look considered if you later add a larger idol beside it.

Size by size

These are the sizes we carry and what people actually use them for.

Measure the shelf, not the Vel

The mistake people make is choosing by picture. A Vel photographed alone gives no sense of scale, and almost every listing online — ours included — shows it that way.

Before ordering, measure the height you have available and subtract at least two inches of clear space above. A six-inch Vel on a shelf with six inches of headroom touches the shelf above and looks wrong, even though it technically fits.

Also check the depth. A Vel with a weighted base needs roughly three inches of depth to sit stably without overhanging the edge.

With base or without?

A Vel with a base stands on its own. The base is weighted, so it stays upright on a flat surface without a stand or support. This is what you want for a shelf.

A Vel without a base is meant to be held, mounted, or placed against something — often hung near a doorway, or carried during kavadi. If it is going on a shelf and you buy one without a base, you will end up propping it against the wall, which never looks right.

For a car dashboard, go smaller

Three inches or less, and specifically one made for it — with a flat, weighted base rather than a round pooja base. A standard Vel on a dashboard slides at the first turn.

On a textured or steeply angled dashboard, even a weighted base benefits from a small adhesive pad underneath.
