- Known for
- Where Murugan's anger cooled, and he married Valli
Thiruthani sits on a hill of 365 steps, one for each day of the year, and is the closest of the six to Chennai. The name comes from the cooling of Murugan's anger after the war with Surapadman.
It is also where he married Valli, the hunter's daughter — the second of his two marriages, and the one that comes from courtship rather than grant. Between Thiruparankundram and Thiruthani, the six hold both of his marriages.
Devotees traditionally visit on the first of January and at Krithigai. It is the abode associated with peace after conflict, and is often the temple people choose after a difficult year.
